Health is an inclusive state of mind where infirmity and disease are completely absent. In order to achieve this state of mind, one must take appropriate steps towards the maintenance of good health. A healthy diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, relaxation, and healthy lifestyle are some of the components that constitute a healthy lifestyle. One must try to attain perfect health all the time for it to contribute positively to one’s quality of life.

A public health program and a community health program aim at creating awareness about the need for a healthy lifestyle. These programs are implemented by organizations such as local colleges, universities, hospitals and other public service organizations. There are various guidelines provided by these organizations regarding healthy eating, healthy activities and other aspects of the right diet and physical activity.

Public health is concerned with the improvement of general health and the prevention of diseases. Public health also ensures quality control of the health services provided. For instance, in the United States the Food and Drug Administration regulates food production, processing, packaging, and advertising of food products. The agency also sets national standards for determining the composition, safety, and purity of commercial drugs. The objective of public health is the promotion of the basic principles of physical education, cleanliness, germ-free living, proper personal hygiene, and protection against occupational hazards. Public health science involves the study of causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, including medical specialties like pediatrics, optometry, family medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

Stress is a major factor that affects our overall health status. It leads to increased blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature and decreases the immune function and the body’s ability to fight diseases. Stress can be managed by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise and a balanced diet can reduce the effects of stress. A holistic approach towards life can help one to cope with stress and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Obesity is an increasing health issue that has become a serious problem among all age groups. People are increasingly becoming fat due to unhealthy lifestyle choices. Lack of physical activities and a sedentary lifestyle are the most common reason for obesity. Unhealthy eating habits, stress, and lack of mental awareness have contributed largely to this condition. In fact, the numbers of obese people have increased so much that it is considered a global health concern.

Although public health is primarily concerned with preventing disease, it also takes care of the adverse effects of diseases. This is done by providing treatment for the diseases. An occupational health services program focuses on protecting employees from diseases that can be dangerous during their career. It also helps an organization to improve the overall health and fitness of its employees. Prevention is better than cure!
